The "get out of jail" EBT card

I just swiped my EBT….EBT…EBT….I just swiped my EBT……if you don't know the song please see below, but we had to just shake our heads at the latest abuse of the welfare/foodstamp credit card known to the social service community as the EBT card.  The Boston Herald is reporting that a convicted drug dealer (in jail again), who was using his jailhouse phone call, asked an unknown associate to go use "his" EBT card at an ATM so he could post bail.  Of course those type of calls are monitored and now the street-level pharmaceutical salesman (aka drug dealer) is the new face of welfare fraud.  Read all about it here.

"It's exactly the type of activity that can occur when folks are allowed to get money off their EBT card," said State Rep. Russell E. Holmes (D-Boston), who is an advocate for tougher reforms.

Until we get the government out of the welfare business and back into private charities' hands, we will continue to see rampant abuses like this and many others that go undetected and drain away precious tax-dollars.
